Ready to become part of a physical rehabilitation team? The Associate of Science (AS) Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) degree program at ɫƵվ Institute of Technology (NEIT) can help you get there. Here, you learn how to carry out care plans, determine the effectiveness of interventions, and support patients in reaching their goals.
NEIT’s PTA program prepares you to work with patients in a range of healthcare settings, including hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, home health, private practice clinics, and more. You gain the knowledge and skills to assist people of all ages and various movement disorders to become independent in their day-to-day functions.
While working under the direction and supervision of a physical therapist, you’ll learn to understand your patient’s unique circumstances and create specialized treatment plans for each one.

Multiple Pathways for a Successful Career in Physical Therapy
No matter where you are on your journey to a physical therapy career, ɫƵվ Tech has options for you.
- No PTA license: If you don’t have a Physical Therapist Assistant License, you can still apply for the physical therapist assistant associate degree program. Once you have successfully completed the PTA program, you can move on to the health practice management bachelor’s degree program, which accepts applications on a rolling basis.
- PTA license, no bachelor’s degree: If you already hold a PTA license, apply for the health practice management bachelor’s degree program. This program can serve as the bridge into NEIT’s Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program, which also accepts applications on a rolling basis.
- Active PTA license and a bachelor’s degree: If you already have an active PTA license and hold a bachelor’s degree, you can apply for the DPT program. NEIT anticipates opening the DPT program to applications in June 2025, with the first student cohort beginning in March 2026.
Prepare for the NPTE
With the rigorous training you receive in the classroom and through Level I and Level II clinical courses off campus, you can sit for the National Physical Therapy Examination for Physical Therapist Assistants, which is required for licensure. You can apply for your PTA license in the state of Rhode Island or the state in which you plan to practice upon successful completion of the exam.

What Can You Do With a Physical Therapist Assistant Degree?
After passing the NPTE, ɫƵվ Tech PTA program graduates can find employment opportunities as PTAs working with individual clients or groups under the direction of a physical therapist (PT).
They can practice in various settings, treating patients with physical disabilities. These include pediatrics, geriatrics, athletic facilities, wellness programs, nursing homes, and hospitals. Our graduates can also practice in other places that offer aid programs or require an exercise physiology specialist.
NEIT graduates serve as compassionate, dedicated members of rehabilitation teams. They are adept at collecting data to determine intervention effectiveness and carrying out selected physical therapy treatments outlined in PT plans and programs.

What’s the difference between a PTA and a Physical Therapist (PT)?
Physical therapists and physical therapist assistants work closely together; however, their roles and responsibilities are significantly different. For example, PTAs must practice under the supervision of a physical therapist, whereas physical therapists have full autonomy in making clinical decisions.
To become a PTA, you must complete an associate degree, which takes approximately two years to complete. In contrast, PTs must complete a doctoral degree, which requires two additional years of study.

What is the national license exam pass rate for the program?
As of February 2024, PTA students who graduated in 2022-2023 had a national license exam ultimate pass rate of 84.4%, a first-time pass rate of 75.5%, and a graduation rate of 72.3%. Of those who sought employment, 100% reported they were employed as a PTA within one year of graduation.
